Last class was the first time that i have ever played around with film, aside from loading a still camera. It seemed somewhat freeing to be able to discover the different ways in which we could manipulate what will be projected onto the screen. I must admit, i laughed when you described how to perform a magazine transfer onto the 16mm; that is close to a procedure to make a fake ID. (just something i saw on 20/20). I'm eager to see how the different transfers come out today. I tried to use a variety of colors to see what comes through on the clear leader. For the first strip that i tried i used all newspaper. This didn't work so well, it only left the trace of an image. When i switched to magazine pictures though, i had no trouble producing images that clearly left their mark on the film. For the fire strip of our project i kinda went to town with the inks and markers. I found a lot more of the image came not from the color i used, but from the type of ink i tried and the ways in which i applied it. i was kind of adamant w/ adrian that i wanted to be responsible for fire (i've always loved those long exposures in national geographic of fire, i've always felt that it was one of the most beautiful sights to film) i used the abstract and ephemeral nature of fire as a starting point to come up with different ways of painting; i tapped the brush on the film, i slowly dragged it, i applied oil and chapstick, sometimes i smeared it with my fingers. all to experiment with the different looks that could be achieved w/ the paints. i think i'll go to michaels today and buy some paints. i included some pictures just to prove my love of fire.
